Author, radio commentator, and ranch historian, Laura Vernon Hamner (1871-1968) was born to James Henry and Laura Lula (Hendrix) Hamner in Tennessee. After studying at Peabody Normal College in Nashville, she attended several Texas colleges and the University of Chicago. For several years, Hamner taught school while working as postmaster at Claude, Texas, from 1913 to 1921. Born near Hart, Texas, in 1923, the son of a wholesale agent for Gulf Oil. Grew up in Dimmitt and served in the Air Force during World War II. Afterward he married Bettye Newton, by whom he had three children, and set up a real estate and abstract business in Dimmitt. He died of a heart attack in 1980. From the description of Papers, 1966.
